Chris Horton is a Taipei-based journalist and author. Prior to moving to Taiwan in 2015, Horton wrote about China’s economic and social transformation throughout the 2000s, primarily from Kunming and Shanghai. From 2013 to 2015, he reported from Hong Kong for The New York Times, The Atlantic, and others, documenting the emergence of the Umbrella Movement, while also covering China’s growing influence in Southeast Asia.

During his time in Taiwan, Horton has covered Taiwan’s domestic politics and its relationship with China for the Times, Bloomberg News, Nikkei Asia, The Wire China, Quartz, and elsewhere.

Horton is author of the 2025 book Ghost Nation: The Story of Taiwan and its Struggle for Survival (Pan Macmillan).
