According to information on the Ministry of Public Security website, the Japan External Trade Organization (日本贸易振兴机构, JETRO) de-registered its representative office in Guangzhou, as of June 29, 2018. Until de-registering, it was permitted to operate in Fujian, Guangdong, and Hainan provinces as well as in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on trade-related issues. The Guangdong Department of Commerce served as its Professional Supervisory Unit. JETRO was among the first several dozen Foreign NGOs to get registered after the Foreign NGO Law went into effect on January 1, 2017.
This is the second organization to de-register under the law. The Li Ka Shing Foundation (李嘉诚基金会), from Hong Kong, was the first to de-register in February 2018.
JETRO still lists the Guangzhou office, in addition to six other China offices, on its “worldwide offices” webpage. JETRO did not respond to a request for comment.
