This week on Sinica, Kaiser Kuo and David Moser are delighted to host Alexander Bernstein, son of Leonard Berstein and director of the Bernstein Family Foundation, who is now in China on part of a cultural tour. Accompanied by Alison Friedman of Ping Pong Productions and mezzo soprano Carla Dirlikov, Alexander joins us for a discussion on music, Broadway, the strengths and weaknesses of musical theater in China, and of course Bernstein’s impressions of China itself.

Mapping a Future China and its Rising Seas

Urban planner and cartographer Jeffrey Linn mapped a possible future for China’s coast, where some 43% of its population currently lives, when the earth’s polar ice caps and glaciers have all melted and the sea rises if the planet’s temperature continues to warm over the course of the 21st century and into the next century.

Malin Oud

Malin Oud is an international development and human rights professional with 15 years’ experience of policy dialogue and development cooperation in North East Asia, including as head of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute’s China Office from 2001 to 2009, as Consultant to the United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights, and as Program Manager at Sida, the Swedish development agency. She studied Chinese language, Chinese law, and international human rights law in Lund, Kunming, and London, and has an M.A. in International Development from Melbourne University. Since 2011, she has been the Managing Director of Tracktwo, a consultancy specialized in sustainability and responsible business, based in Stockholm. She is also a Senior Advisor at the Institute for Human Rights and Business.
