Restructuring Paper on a Proposed Project Restructuring of Jiangxi Integrated Agricultural Modernization Project

The development objective of the Jiangxi Integrated Agricultural Modernization Project (JIAMP) for China is to improve the livelihood of the farmers in the project areas through establishment of integrated, sustainable, and market-driven agricultural production systems focusing on productivity and high quality agricultural output. The project was approved on November 20, 2003, became effective on May 14, 2004, and the closing date is June 30, 2010. This report assess a proposed restructuring of the project. The reallocation is necessary to enable the participating local governments to utilize the substantial savings in various categories to carry out additional works as categories with reduced allocations and categories with increased allocation.

Growing Tensions Threaten the U.S.-China Economic Relationship

Frictions in the U.S.-China relationship are nothing new, but they have intensified in recent months. This paper examines the U.S.-China economic relationship and some of its high-profile sources of friction, distills the substance from the hype, and concludes that although some policy tweaks would be beneficial, a more aggressive U.S. policy tack is unnecessary and unwanted. Much more can be done to cultivate our areas of agreement using carrots before seriously considering the use of sticks.

What to Do About China? 

The United States is the world’s dominant power, and America will remain influential for decades to come. But China is poised to eventually force Washington to share its leadership position. Such a change would be uncomfortable for American policymakers. This article suggests that even if the U.S. no longer enjoys global hegemony, Washington still must be able to guarantee U.S. security. Washington needs only possess a military capable of preventing other nations or groups from threatening the United States, and that should become the basic objective of American foreign policy.

Seeding Positive Impacts: How Business and Civil Society Can Contribute to the Sustainability of Chinese Agriculture

From farm-level impacts related to pesticide and fertilizer use, to the processing and packaging of the final product, processes along the agricultural supply chain in China have an adverse environmental health impact. Companies and civil society can take action to further refine supply chain sustainability programs. The top priority for consumers usually is product safety, which has been addressed by companies and civil society groups as they work to ensure that pesticides are used appropriately. As traceability and supplier performance in this area improve, companies also are expanding the scope of their sustainability efforts to address fertilizer overuse, water efficiency, wastewater discharge, and environmentally-friendly packaging.
